Artist Description and motivation:
This sculpture brings to life the disconnect between the rich and powerful and the rest of the world. They are focused on making money in the short term, not on the long-term goals, as the rest of us are. The decisions made by governments are swayed by big corporations that pay lip service to environmental issues, as regulations get in the way of making more money. Their dream is to become even richer and more powerful, no matter the cost. This kind of blind short sidedness will only damage the earth in the long run and cause pain and suffering.
I, like many others, want to be better off. However, I am not willing to risk the future of our children and future generations so I can become richer at the rest of the world’s expense.
This sculpture was created by using hardwood flooring blanks that were on their way to the landfill or to be burned in a wood stove. Instead, I rescued it and recycled it into a piece of artwork that can last the test of time. In the back of this artwork, behind a wax seal, is a coin from the Royal Canadian Mint, used to date the artwork to 2026. Behind the second wax seal is a short time capsule explaining why this artwork was created and its meaning, including dates and signature.
